Summary

  • Add Python 3.15 isnormal, issubnormal, signbit, fmax, and fmin to pymath::math.
  • Route extrema through the existing system C libm / pure-Rust libm backend structure, matching CPython's direct fmax / fmin calls.
  • Exercise the existing fixed-size EDGE_VALUES matrix with native Rust tests, including signed zero, subnormals, infinities, quiet/signaling NaNs, and NaN payloads.
  • Keep the upstream optional malachite-bigint = "0" requirement unchanged; dependency alignment belongs in RustPython.

Reference: CPython 3.15.0 final, commit d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc, Modules/mathmodule.c.

Dependency compatibility

The existing malachite-bigint = "0" requirement is preserved. RustPython should align its own dependency version rather than narrow pymath's accepted versions. This PR contains no package version bump or release.

Local validation after restoring the manifest used malachite-bigint 0.14.0 in the ignored development Cargo.lock. That local resolution is not a published pin or a change to the manifest's ^0 requirement. The RustPython API split can delegate to these functions once the new pymath APIs are available to that consumer.

Validation

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check and git diff --check
  • Native x86_64 Linux: exactly math::misc::tests::edgetest_python315_classification and math::misc::tests::edgetest_python315_extrema, both with --no-default-features and with default features plus malachite-bigint,mul_add
  • Native library strict Clippy with complex,malachite-bigint,mul_add
  • wasm32-unknown-unknown library compile-only check with --no-default-features, covering the pure-Rust libm backend

The selected tests make no Python calls and do not run the existing broader PyO3/property/integer stress suites. Native tests were bounded to 30 seconds each. No Windows, macOS, or WebAssembly runtime result is claimed. The no-default native test and WebAssembly compile builds report the existing unused m::hypot warning. Upstream has no pre-commit configuration; the normal hook was installed using its documented --allow-missing-config mode, with formatting and Clippy run explicitly.

CI repair and follow-up

The original head passed Ubuntu, Windows, exotic-target compilation, and Clippy. macOS failed only the optimized signaling-NaN extrema assertion. LLVM can fold the result NaN check away when it infers a numeric operand; native AArch64 extrema may nevertheless quiet a signaling NaN. A Rust 1.99 emitted-IR probe confirms that transformation for a minimal case. The test now observes the computed result through std::hint::black_box before applying the same assertions, and reports exact input/result bits on failure. No API implementation, dependency bounds, accepted result, or test case was changed.

Local checks after this test-only repair passed: formatting, diff whitespace, both exact edge-test filters in both existing feature modes, strict library Clippy, and an optimized native two-test harness extracted unchanged from those test bodies against a release library. This is not a full release suite or an Apple runtime result. At exact head 3a5f7f235f5da7b6852b65d2fc0c69ad7287d596, Rust CI passed: Ubuntu, Windows, macOS (including the formerly failing release extrema test and both bigint backends), exotic-target checks, and Clippy. The macOS job also passed Intel macOS and iOS compilation checks.

CodSpeed's separate analysis reports integer regressions but warns that the environments differ. Job logs show base Rust 1.98 / cargo-codspeed and divan 5.0.1 / runner 5.2.1 versus head Rust 1.99 / 5.0.3 / runner 5.5.0. num-bigint remains 0.4.8 in both. A current-environment main baseline is needed before attributing that difference to this patch. Dispatching the existing main CodSpeed workflow returned HTTP 403 requiring repository admin rights; a maintainer must start that baseline. No performance finding was waived.

AI assistance

OpenAI Codex assisted with source inspection, implementation, native tests, independent source review, and validation. The precise model version is not exposed by this runtime. This change is ready for maintainer review; outstanding checks are noted below.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added fmax and fmin to select the maximum or minimum of two floating-point values.
    • Added isnormal, issubnormal, and signbit predicates for checking floating-point values.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the math compatibility checklist to show 61 of 61 items complete, including the newly supported functions and predicates.

Match CPython's extrema through the existing libm backends and add bounded native edge tests. Constrain the concrete malachite BigInt API to the 0.13 series for review.

Qualify the README’s bit-exact compatibility claim.

The new fmax and fmin entries are covered by the README’s unconditional “Every function” statement. Their tests allow platform-dependent signed-zero ties and signaling-NaN results. Update the claim to exclude these cases.

Suggested fix
-**0 ULP (bit-exact) compatibility with CPython's math and cmath modules.**
+**Bit-exact compatibility with CPython's math and cmath modules where the result representation is defined.**

-Every function produces identical results to Python at the binary representation level - not just "close enough", but exactly the same bits.
+Every function produces the same bits as Python when CPython defines a unique result representation. Platform-defined cases, such as signed-zero ties and signaling-NaN handling in `fmax` and `fmin`, may produce different valid bits.
