What changed in Copilot CLI

Three beginner-relevant changes shipped in stable releases v1.0.92–v1.0.95 (October 5–9, 2026):

  1. v1.0.92 — New copilot config terminal subcommands (list, get, set, remove) for managing settings outside a session
  2. v1.0.93 — User settings moved from ~/.copilot/config.json → ~/.copilot/settings.json (keys in the old file are now silently ignored)
  3. v1.0.93 — MCP server configuration changes now apply between turns automatically — no session restart required

What was updated

Chapter 01 (01-setup-and-first-steps/README.md)

  • Expanded the "Session vs. persistent model" tip to introduce the new copilot config terminal commands, with copy-paste examples for set, list, and remove

Chapter 06 (06-mcp-servers/README.md)

  • Updated the web access section: replaced ~/.copilot/config.json with ~/.copilot/settings.json and added a callout warning beginners that the old file is now ignored
  • Removed all "restart Copilot" instructions after saving MCP config files; replaced with a note that changes take effect between turns automatically

> 💡 **Session vs. persistent model**: The `/model` command changes the model for the **current session only**. When you start a new session, Copilot will use the default again. To set a permanent default model for all future sessions, use `/config model` instead.

To set a permanent default model for all future sessions, use `/config model` inside a session, or the `copilot config` terminal command from your regular shell (no session needed):

> 💡 **The `.` path**: The `.` means "current directory". Copilot can access files relative to where you launched it. In a Codespace, this is your workspace root. You can also use an absolute path like `/workspaces/copilot-cli-for-beginners` if you prefer.

Add this to your `~/.copilot/mcp-config.json` and restart Copilot.
Add this to your `~/.copilot/mcp-config.json`. MCP configuration changes take effect between turns.

You can control which URLs are accessible via `~/.copilot/config.json` (general Copilot settings), which is separate from `~/.copilot/mcp-config.json` (MCP server definitions).

> ⚠️ **Settings file location**: Copilot CLI reads user settings from `~/.copilot/settings.json`. The older `~/.copilot/config.json` file is no longer used for user settings. Any keys placed there will be silently ignored.
